For most of us, deciding to tackle our clutter can be challenging and letting go of anything that has sentimental value can be difficult. If your clutter is starting to take over and all your best efforts have left you frustrated, it might be time to call in a professional. Over the last few years a new breed of service providers has evolved who can help tackle clutter while also helping to get better organized. They are called “professional organizers” or “clutter consultants”.

Their rates vary anywhere from $20 an hour to $150 an hour, depending on the type of service they offer and the length of time it will take. Many will offer a free one hour initial consultation and after that, some will have a minimum of a two to four hour consultation rate. Some will also have consultation packages available and may even offer workshops locally that are quite cost-effective and informative.

With so much variation in price, how does a person choose a service provider? I decided to approach five local consultants and asked them for their advice on what to look for, what to expect, and the most common reasons why people use their services.

Main Reasons People Hire a Consultant

  • Desperate to de-clutter, just can’t do it themselves.
  • Feeling overwhelmed.
  • Craving more time, space, and clarity.
  • Need guidance and motivation.
  • Starting a new chapter in their lives.
  • Want help and fresh ideas to make their homes look good and run more smoothly.
  • Have no idea of where to start.

Key Issues In Choosing a Clutter Consultant or Professional Organizer

Reputation: Do your homework, seek referrals. Ask around to see if any of your friends or colleagues have hired a professional. You may also want to check some of their references and/or testimonials on their Web site.

Comfort Level: As you may be spending a lot of time with this person in your home, it is important that you feel comfortable with him or her. The best way to find this out is to meet with them ahead of time for an initial consultation (often first hour is free)

Customized Solutions: It is important that the consultant will be able to provide long-term solutions that fit your needs, goals, lifestyle, and budget.

Professionalism: The consultant must be able to demonstrate respect, be confidential, is encouraging, non-judgmental, patient, resourceful, a good problem-solver, and efficient.
